Hair Hassle

I cut my hair shoulder length and I hate it. How long will I have to wait until my hair grows back to halfway down my back?? What is the growth rate of hair, anyways? Does it depend on the color or something??
-- Lauren

Well, the average yearly rate of hair growth is about six inches, so it should take a year or three. However, there are variations. Genetics seem to have an affect on how fast hair grows and so do age and hormonal state (hair growth seems to be affected by pregnacy). But hair surprisingly grows faster if it's shorter than longer so you may be able to have at least a couple of inches past shoulder length hair sooner than you think.

Currupt Cuticle

What is the point of a cuticle? Is it even important? ps(idk if i spelled cuticle right but its the thing on your finger above your nail.) thanks.
-- Jen

A cuticle (yes, you did spell it correctly), anatomically known as eponychium, is a dead layer of epidermal cells, or keratinocytes, that produce a layer of Horn Protein Keratin around the bottom and sides of our nails. These particles are also found holding hair follicles in place. Cuticles provide protection and hold the nails in place.

Polar Bear Skin

Is it true that a polar bear's skin is black? If so, why is it black?
-- Shane

Yes, polar bears really do have black skin, although it's hard to see under all that white fur. Their skin is black because black absorbs heat better than any other color (or shade). So while their fur acts as camoflage, their skin helps to warm them up.

Door Dues

James said...
If the FBI breaks your door down do they have to pay for it?

The Experts say...
Kid, if the FBI have to break down your door because you broke the law, obviously they shouldn't have to pay for it because you did something wrong. Now if they break down your door and you are innocent, we would think they should.

Seashell Sally

Why did Sally sell seashells on the seashore when you can just pick them up anyway?

The Experts say...
It's just a saying kid.

Movies

If nobody buys a ticket to a movie do they still show it?
-- James

Yes, they do. They don't know if someone will buy a ticket late or something. Movie theaters constantly have something playing. Between movies, they have comercials (trust me, i once thought a movie was an hour ealier than it was and ended up watching half and hour of comercials before i went to the manager).

Books Vs. Novels

What's the difference between books and novels?

Puffy Penguins

Matt said...
Do penguins have knees?

The Experts say...
Interesting question. But yes. Penguins seem to have very short legs and no knees because only the lower leg is visible. Their knees and upper legs are covered, hiding them from view.

Fingernails

How much do your nails grow a year?
-- Audrina

The average rate of fingernail growth is 3.65 cm a year (they grow about 0.1 mm a day), but they grow faster in the summer and when you're young. People who are righthanded have faster growng fingernails on their right hands (vice versa for left handed people). This may be due to increases blood flow from more use. Also, men tend to grow fingernails faster than women.

Hard Hitting Headaches

Katie said...
How do you get headaches? Like what causes them and makes them hurt so much?

The Experts say...
Although it may feel like it, a headache is not actually a pain in your brain. Your brain can tell you when other parts of your body hurt, but it can't actually feel pain. Most headaches happen outside your skull, in the nerves, blood vessels, and muscles that surrounding your head and neck. Sometimes the they swell, and also can tighten or go through other changes that put pressure on the surrounding nerves. The nerves send a rush of pain messages to your brain, and you end up with a headache.

Troubling T.V.

Paige said...
If t.v. is so bad, why do they have them in every hospital room?

The Experts say...
Well Paige, t.v. isn't actually bad for you, unless you're so close to it that you get the radiation from it. The only reason why people say it's "bad" for you is probably because it makes you lazy and sluggish. If you watch it once in a while that's okay. It's only "bad" when you're watching it all the time. But the reason that they have them in hospital rooms is because those people who are in those rooms have to stay in bed and have nothing better so it's justified that they watch it a lot.

Strange Sneezes

Amanda said... Why do we close our eyes when we sneeze?

Actually, some people can sneeze with their eyes open and some people can’t. Doctors say that sneezing is a reflex and so is closing our eyes when we sneeze. We have no control over whether or not we close our eyes when we sneeze. But some people don’t have reflex that forces them to close their eyes, so when they sneeze they can keep their eyes open. Some people try to close their eyes so when they sneeze their eyes won’t pop out. The truth is, our eyes don’t really pop out.
Some people think that your body closes your eyes when you sneezebecause that will block germs and bacteria from getting into your eyes. That's not true because your eyes deal with germs all the time. If you close your eyes during a sneeze, then it is just a reflex. During this part of the sneeze, we tense some of our muscles. The tensing (tightening) of our muscles causes our eyes to shut.

A Tail Of An Abnormal Dog

I have two dogs. a german shephard and a lab. my lab has four toes on
her back legs, but my german shephard has five toes. is that normal?
-- Stella

Dear Stella,
well, most dogs have five toes on their back legs, and some breeds
have six, so it seems that your dog has a mutation. this isn't that
unusual-- many cats have an abnormal number of toes.

Australian Toilets

Emily said...
Heyy i love your blog. i have a ?. why does the water swirl down the drain in the opposite direction in Australia?

The Experts Said...

This actually is a very common question among people because it is so strange. As air goes from high to low pressure in the northern hemisphere, it is directed to the right by the Coriolis force. In the southern hemisphere, air moving from high to low pressure is turned to the left by the Coriolis force. For those of you who don't know what the Coriolis force is a force which, due to the Earth's rotation, deflects the motion of an object or a fluid moving over the surface of a rotating body such as a planet or star. So if you look at the picture to the left, the fluids in our toilets in the northern hemisphere turn clockwise, and the ones in the southern hemisphere go counter-clockwise because of the way they turn due to th e Coriolis force. Confusing...? A bit. Just read it through a couple of times.

Bad Seeds

Dear Experts,
I'm a plant lover and I am alway growing things. I recently found some seeds for my favorite plants, but I'm afraid that they may be to old to be able to grow. So can I use seeds that may be a year or two old?
Signed, Angela
Dear Angela,
Yes actually, you can. Seeds can be stored for extremely long periods of time and still be able to grow. Believe it or not, seeds that are over two hundred years old have been coaxed into growing! So go ahead and plant those seeds!

Right and Left Handedness

Dear Experts,
Do right-handed people have any advantages over left-handed people?
Signed, Bridget

Dear Bridget,
Actually, yes. Right-handed people live an average of 9 years longer than left-handed people, although there is no proven reason why. Also, right-handedness is more common, so if you are left-handed, many appliances are hard to use. But we're not saying left-handedness is bad because it just makes you different. Thanks for the question Bridget.
